The Ruling on Using Nutmeg - Shaykh Abdullah Al-Bukhari

The questioner asked: What is the ruling on using the substance nutmeg in food as I have heard some making it harām as there is something from intoxication within it?

Shaykh Abdullah Al Bukhari mentioned:

The origin of this substance is that it is from that which is consumed or eaten. Its used and found with herbalists and perfumers. The origin of its ruling is that it is permissible and not prohibited. The fact that some use it for intoxication or something from the likes of these trials, then that does not make it haraam in its origin. Verily it is haraam when other things are used with it, which cause it to be an intoxicating substance. The affair is the same as grapes, raisins and other than them.

So the origin is, it is permissable, and it by itself nutmeg, if you eat it you will not be intoxicated nor if you drink it as a drink. Clear?

This is how the affair is may Allah bless you. Due to those abusing nutmeg, the authorities made it prohibited here to sell in the herbal and perfume shops because people use it for that which is prohibited.
